How Do I Get to Hyles-Anderson College?

How do I get to Hyles-Anderson College by CAR?
The majority of our students travel by car to our campus. Fortunately, Hyles-Anderson College is located close to the major interstate highways I-65, I-80, and I-94, all of which intersect a convenient 15-minute driving time from the campus.

How do I get to Hyles-Anderson College by BUS?
For those who will be traveling by Greyhound, it is very important that you specify the correct destination point when purchasing a ticket. You should request the Hammond, Indiana station. Do not rely on a ticket or travel agent’s advice. If you have any questions concerning this, please call Mr. Dan Clubb at (219) 365-4031, ext. 1246. Please arrange your arrival time between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 7:05 p.m. Those are the only hours that the college provides transportation. The transportation fee will be $30.00.

How do I get to Hyles-Anderson College by TRAIN?
Because of recent changes to Amtrak’s service in the area, we do NOT recommend that firsttime students travel here by train. We have found over the years that most of our students that live a considerable distance away travel here by plane. Some travel here by bus. Only a handful travel here by train. If transportation by train is the only option available for you, we will accommodate you. A transportation fee will be required. The transportation fee will be $30.00. However, it is very important that you work out these travel arrangements in advance with our transportation director, Mr. Dan Clubb. His office number is (219) 365-4031, ext. 1246, and his cell number is (219) 306-7094.

On this day we will allow each new student to be dressed in casual attire as he or she moves into the dormitories and registers for classes.
Men: Shirts should have a collar and sleeves, and shirttails need to be tucked inside the trousers. Ties may be worn but are not required. Dress or casual slacks should be worn. These slacks should be neatly pressed and creased. Denim would not be appropriate on this day. Belts or suspenders should be worn with trousers designed for belts. Athletic and casual shoes may be worn, but sandals will not be allowed. You should have a clean, tapered haircut. Your hair should be neatly combed. You should not have any facial hair. Sideburns should not be more than halfway down the ear.

Ladies: Women are to be tastefully and modestly dressed. The neckline and back of your top should not be low-cut. The hemline of ladies’ skirts may not exceed two inches from the floor at any point around the skirt when the student is in an upright, kneeling position. Only one slit per dress or skirt is allowed, and no slit may be worn more than four (4) inches above the hemline of the dress or skirt. No undergarment may be showing through the slit. Denim would not be appropriate on this day. Hosiery should be worn.

We will have many visitors on the college campus opening day, and we want to make the right impression on them. Thank you in advance for your help with this important matter of your appearance.

Financial Planning for College

Local Banking:

Many students find it necessary and convenient to bank in this area. If you will be opening an account in a local bank, you should be aware that area banks put a hold on personal checks for 15 business days, so you should bring money orders or cash if you plan to open a checking account upon arrival. The college Business Office will be able to cash checks for over the amount the student is paying on his bill. The Business Office does accept Visa and MasterCard.

Area Services

Cash:

Dormitory students should be cautious about bringing large sums of money into the dormitories. Travelers’ checks, money orders, and personal checks would be better ways of having cash available for your use. The Business Office employees will be available on Opening Day to receipt and deposit any cash you bring directly to your account.

Ladies’ Bank:

The school makes available to the lady dormitory residents a “Girls’ Bank.” This service is offered to help ladies have cash available for use but to not have it
in the dormitory rooms.

Saving for College:

There are numerous jobs available to our students to enable them to pay their bills. However, a wise student will save money during the summer in order to
take more credits during the school year or to work fewer hours during the school year and concentrate more on his classes and ministry.

Jobs:

Students enrolling under the Jericho Plan will not be allowed to work a regular, off-campus job during their first two school years, nor should they need to do so. For our other students, there are abundant job opportunities available to our students. Brother Jon Tutton works as an employment counselor for our students. He will be available to our students during the first few days of school if they need assistance in finding employment. Students who arrive on campus on September 8, 2009, would probably not begin a new job for a week. It would then normally be at least ten days after the student begins his job before he would receive even a partial paycheck. With this in mind, it means that your income from your employment here would probably not begin until September 18, 2009. Of course, these are general guidelines, and there are individual exceptions. However, it is certainly true that the more money you can save between now and the beginning of the semester, the easier it will make it for you to begin college here.

Work scholarship students will receive their work assignments on Tuesday, September 8, in the line for dormitory assignments.

Financial Assistance:

For students not participating in the Jericho Plan, Hyles-Anderson College offers academic scholarships and work scholarships. The college also provides scholarships for the daughters of foreign missionaries. The college does not accept any state or federal financial assistance. Additional information about financial assistance may be found on page 57-58 of the 2009-2010 Hyles-Anderson College catalog.

Costs:

The cost will vary depending upon credits taken and various fees. The following rates are typical for most freshmen. See pages 54-59 of the 2009-2010 Hyles-Anderson College catalog for more detailed information. Of course, these rates and fees are subject to change at any time.

Students must pay at least one eighth of the tuition, registration, and room and board fees in order to register. Certain other fees must be paid in full for a student to register.

Generally, textbooks will cost an average of about $20 per credit for students not under the Jericho Plan. (The textbook charge for Jericho Plan student is included in their registration fee of $1500.)

Health Insurance:

Most students are covered through their parents’ insurance or through insurance made available by their employer.

You must either submit a photocopy of your proof of insurance or be required to purchase health insurance through our college-sponsored program in order to register.
